So if you're thinking about doing a road trip from Dubai to Oman, honestly it's one of the best things you can do for a weekend. The drive is actually not that bad, way easier than you'd probably expect when you first think about it. Most people don't even realize how close Oman actually is to Dubai until they actually make the trip themselves, and then after that first time they just keep going back because the whole thing just feels different. Like, the landscape changes completely once you cross that border. The vibe is completely different from what you're used to in the emirates, you know?
The main route you're going to be taking is through Hatta if you're coming from Dubai, so that's the Hatta-Dakshin crossing which is basically where most people go. The drive to Hatta from Dubai takes about ninety minutes or maybe a bit longer depending on what the traffic is like that day and where exactly in Dubai you're starting from. Once you actually get to the border itself, there's the UAE exit checkpoint first and then you go straight into the Oman entry checkpoint, and if you've got all your paperwork sorted properly the whole thing typically takes maybe thirty to forty-five minutes, though honestly it depends on how busy it is that day.
Here's the thing though and this is actually important—make absolutely sure you've already got your Oman tourist visa sorted before you even leave Dubai, because there is literally no way to get that done at the border. Like, it's not happening. You need to apply online before you go, which is honestly pretty simple, and you need to have that sorted at least a few days ahead of time so you're not stressing out at the last minute about whether it's actually approved or not.
From the border crossing, Muscat is about another two hours away so if you leave early from Dubai you can actually get there in a day, which is pretty doable. Bring printed copies of all your documents because your phone will die or the networks will be spotty in certain areas, so basically you need that backup.

Modest clothing is appreciated once you're there, keep your fuel topped up, and download offline maps because exploring Oman is way better when you're not trying to use your data.

If the whole Oman tourist visa thing feels like too much hassle and you just want to focus on actually planning your trip, Efficient Tourism can handle your Oman visa application for you so you've got one less thing to worry about.
